10 mm vs 51 mm — Which Version Should You Choose?

AXIS Q3556-LVE 10 mm is the better option when you need wide coverage. Its field of view reaches approximately 101.8°, making it suitable for entrances, parking areas, yards and general surveillance.

AXIS Q3556-LVE 51 mm is intended for longer-distance observation. Its field of view narrows to approximately 8.5°, allowing the camera to concentrate available image detail on a smaller, more distant area.

The correct version should therefore be selected based on target distance and required scene width, rather than choosing solely by maximum focal length.

Important Operational Notes

Select the 10 mm or 51 mm version carefully according to surveillance distance and required field of view.

The 10 mm version is optimized for broad coverage, while the 51 mm version is more appropriate for distant or narrowly defined surveillance areas.

Recording at 100/120 fps can substantially increase network bandwidth and storage consumption compared with conventional 25/30 fps surveillance.

High frame rates should be enabled where operationally useful rather than automatically used for every recording stream.

Built-in IR enables surveillance in complete darkness, but effective IR performance depends on target distance, scene reflectivity, weather and camera positioning.

Electronic Image Stabilization can help maintain usable footage when vibration or mounting movement is present.

Analytics accuracy depends on target size, camera angle, lighting, environmental conditions and configuration.

A suitable PoE Class 4 network switch, injector or power source should be provided.

Storage capacity should be calculated using the required resolution, frame rate, compression, scene activity and retention period.
